If your dog is between the ages of 2 and 7 years old and weighs
more than 55 pounds (these guidelines may vary), it may be able
to help save the life of a fellow canine by becoming a blood donor.
Prior to donating blood, your dog should have its blood typed to
determine if it has A+ or A- blood. Donating blood is generally
not painful for the dog, and many
dogs enjoy the extra attention. Dogs can give blood as often as
once every month, but once every three months is generally recommended.
Your dog should not be exercised on the same day after it donates
blood. To find out how you and your dog can help in your community,
contact a local veterinary clinic or the veterinary department at
a university in your area.
